University education should be free to everyone, regardless of income. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

A high level of education is one of the most important indicators of a country’s development, so many have raised the question of whether university education should be made free-of-charge. From my personal experience, the free-tuition education system entails more drawbacks than benefits.

a high level of education: Trình độ giáo dục cao

Free-of-charge = free

The free-tuition education system: Hệ thống giáo dục miễn phí

On the one hand, I have to acknowledge that there are certain merits of subsidized education. Firstly, the abolition of tuition fees ensures the equality of educational opportunity for everyone, irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds. This free access to tertiary education especially benefits underprivileged individuals in society, enabling them to continue with their education without feeling marginalized. Secondly, as tertiary education is within reach of every individual, raising the country’s overall education level becomes a fruitful endeavor. A higher percentage of educated people will, in turn, lead to crime reduction and economic progress.

Subsidized education: Giáo dục được nhà nước tài trợ

The abolition of tuition fees: Sự xoá bỏ học phí

(The) free access to tertiary education: Sự tiếp cận việc học đại học miễn phí

To continue with one’s education: Tiếp tục học lên (đại học, thạc sĩ…)

On the other hand, I firmly believe that waiving tuition fees does us more harm than good. The main drawback comes from the fact that most governments cannot subsidize education while maintaining outstanding teaching quality. Many public universities in Vietnam have chosen to be financially self- sufficient to be able to attract more competent teachers and improve their teaching facilities. Furthermore, insisting on a tuition-free system would place financial burdens on members of the public as taxes would need to be raised to cover education expenses. Taxpayers whose children do not attend university are likely to find this tax increase unjustified.

To waive tuition fees: xoá học phí

To subsidize education: (nhà nước) Tài trợ học phí

To be financially self-sufficient: Tự chủ kinh tế

All in all, offering learning opportunities to those in need brings numerous benefits to society, but it also poses many problems, including the financial strain on both the government and its citizens; hence, I am against government subsidies for university education.

To offer learning opportunities: Cung cấp cơ hội học tập

Government subsidies: Các khoản viện trợ của nhà nước
